From Chancellor Candidate to Committee Chair: Laschet's New Role

15-05-2025

Armin Laschet, the former CDU leader and one-time chancellor candidate, is reportedly set to become the chairman of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee. This move, as reported by the 'Bild' newspaper and confirmed by Union circles to the German Press Agency, marks a significant post for Laschet within the German parliament's framework. Despite being a contender for the foreign minister position in the new black-red coalition government, the role was ultimately awarded to Johann Wadephul, a decision made by CDU chief Friedrich Merz.

Laschet's extensive international experience and connections position him as a fitting choice for the committee's leadership. His tenure as a Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2005, coupled with his current role as Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 2022, underscores his diplomatic credentials. Furthermore, his appointment as the Federal Republic of Germany's Commissioner for Cultural Affairs under the Franco-German Treaty from 2019 to 2021 highlights his deep ties with France, a key ally.

The decision to nominate Laschet for the chairmanship of the Foreign Affairs Committee reflects the CDU/CSU's strategic positioning within the Bundestag's committee structure. The Union's insistence on leading this pivotal committee, over the SPD's preference for Rolf Mützenich, signals its intent to maintain a strong voice in Germany's foreign policy discourse. Laschet's election to the position, however, remains pending approval by the committee members.

This development comes after a period of political recalibration for Laschet, following his defeat in the 2021 federal election as the Union's chancellor candidate. His subsequent stepping down as CDU leader in January 2022 paved the way for Friedrich Merz's leadership. Now, as Laschet prepares to potentially helm the Foreign Affairs Committee, his political journey takes a new turn, focusing on shaping Germany's international relations from a legislative vantage point.
